Application of flow cytometry for evaluation of the phenotype of lymphocytes, present in the thyroid glands of patients with lymphoma in extrathyroid localisation

Adamczewski Zbigniew , Dabrowski Jan , Lewinski Andrzej

Introduction: Cytological diagnostics has got an established position in thyroid diseases. In the recent years, attempts have been undertaken to use the biological material, left in needles after cytological preparation is ready, to obtain additional diagnostic data.Goal of study: The goal of the study was evaluation of the possibility to use the results of fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) for confirmation of either the presence or the absence of lym...

The manner of performing the thyroid ultrasound examination and the reliability of assessment of the thyroid size in school-aged children

Zygmunt Arkadiusz , Adamczewski Zbigniew , Karbownik-Lewinska Malgorzata , Lewinski Andrzej

Goitre incidence in school-aged children evaluated by the use of ultrasonography (US), apart from reflecting urine iodine concentration and percentage of households consuming iodized salt, is an essential indicator for assessing iodine intake in a given area. The position in which the US examination is being performed can also be an important problem in terms of its result interpretation. The aim of the study was to examine what is the difference between the thyroid volume mea...

K1 cell line in vitro: the impact of diagnostic absorbed doses from 131I

Stasiolek Mariusz , Adamczewski Zbigniew , Karwowski Boleslaw , Dedecjus Marek , Lewinski Andrzej

Background: Diagnostic whole-body scan is a standard procedure in patients with thyroid cancer prior to the application of therapeutic dose of 131I. Unfortunately, administration of radioisotope in diagnostic dose may decrease further radioiodine uptake – the phenomenon called ‘thyroid stunning’. We estimated radiation absorbed dose-dependent changes in genetic material, in particular in sodium iodide symporter (NIS) gene promoter, and NIS protein lev...

Influence of thyrotropin on human peripheral blood immune cell populations

Stasiolek Mariusz , Adamczewski Zbigniew , Pula Bartosz , Dziegiel Piotr , Lewinski Andrzej

Introduction: Dendritic cells (DCs) are considered as main regulators of immune system. Functional properties of DCs depend on their subtype, maturation status, interaction with other immune cells as well as environmental factors including hormones. Recently, we have shown a direct, independent of TSH, regulatory influence of thyroid hormones on human DCs function. The aim of the present study was to analyze ex vivo the effect of systemically administered TSH on human...

Estimation of parathyroid hormone level in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and negative SPECT scans in the material obtained during fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of the focal neck lesions

Adamczewski Zbigniew , Dedecjus Marek , Brzezinski Jan , Lewinski Andrzej

Objective: The presence of a single parathyroid adenoma is a cause of primary hyperparathyroidism in most cases. Minimally invasive parathyreoidectomy is a treatment of choice in PHPT patients and precise localization of the changed parathyroids is crucial for successful removal. The aim of the study was to assess usefulness of parathormone level estimation in the material obtained during FNAB of the focal neck lesions in order to differentiate structures...

Elastography based on tissue Doppler in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules: a pilot study

Adamczewski Zbigniew , Krawczyk-Rusiecka Kinga , Dedecjus Marek , Brzezinski Jan , Lewinski Andrzej

Objective: Aiming at the highest specifity in differentiating benign from malignant thyroid nodules effects in new diagnostics developments. Recent technologies such as elastography enable determination of tissue stiffness difference between focal lesions and surrounding thyroid tissue – reference tissue. This method is based on quantifying the stiffness of the lesion – the malignant changes show decreased elasticity when compared to adjacent tissue. Tissue Doppler u...

Transient hyperthyrotropinemia in outpatient children treated due to acute infections of the respiratory system

Adamczewska Katarzyna , Adamczewski Zbigniew , Stasiak Magdalena , Lewinski Andrzej , Stawerska Renata

IntroductionDiagnostics of thyroid dysfunctions is frequently based on the measurements of TSH serum concentration only. Currently, due to a tendency to minimize stressful situations for a child (such as venipuncture to take a blood sample), some tests (i.e. TSH assessment) are performed at the Primary Healthcare Centre while other diagnostic tests (e.g. during an infection) are run. If TSH serum concentration is outside the reference range, it leads to ...

Thyroid function parameters in Polish pregnant women

Trofimiuk-Muldner Malgorzata , Szybinski Zbigniew , Sokolowski Grzegorz , Stefanska Agnieszka , Buziak-Bereza Monika , Adamczewski Zbigniew , Lewinski Andrzej , Hubalewska-Dydejczyk Alicja

Thyroid function in pregnancy differs between populations. The aim of the study was to assess thyroid parameters in Polish pregnant women. It included 1095 pregnant volunteers aged 16–42 years (174, 501, 420 in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimester, respectively), who gave their informed written consent. In each woman thyroid ultrasound was performed, 90.7% had TSH, fT4 and a-TPO measured, and 84.0% iodine urinary concentration (UIC) in urine spot sample estimated.<p class=...
